Yesterday we had a guest speaker, Mrs. Caskey, a Johnson County Naturalist. We first played a game very similar to hangman, but it was called Snowman Melt. We were to guess what the word was before our snowman melted. It came down to the base of the snowman, but we finally figured out the word, ADAPTATIONS.
We discussed how animals adapt to their surroundings and environment. Mrs. Caskey showed our class a salamander that was found in a basement.
Our conversation then moved on to the Bald Eagle. Mrs. Caskey was informed that we have been watching the Decorah Eagle Nest. We learned about how big an eagle's wing span is, how to tell the difference between a male and female, the weight of an eagle (approximately 9 pounds), and all the bones in an eagle are hallow.
Lastly, Mrs. Caskey shared with us a Native American tale called, "How Turtle Flew South for Winter". We really enjoyed this tale! Thanks for coming in, Mrs. Caskey! We hope to see you again soon!
